Wilderness First Aid
16+ hour Wilderness First Aid certification course. Learn patient assessment, wound care, splinting, environmental emergencies, and evacuation protocols. Gain confidence to lead backcountry adventures safely. WFA certification valid 3 years. Explore discipleship concepts related to building trust through competence, and the relationship between intuition and reason.
Backpacking Trip Planning
Lunch session covering trip planning essentials: route selection, gear lists, food planning, Leave No Trace principles, weather monitoring, and risk management. Practice packing techniques and weight distribution. Preparation for the backpacking trip to the Dragons Tooth, Mcaffee’s Knob, and Tinker Cliff’s backpacking trip. Explore discipleship concepts related to designing positive shared experiences for groups with diverse risk tolerances.
Rock Climbing Intro. Class
Beginner climbing class covering gym safety, harness use, basic knots (figure-8), belay techniques, climbing movement fundamentals, and communication commands. Top-rope climbing on easy routes. No experience necessary.
Foraging Class
Learn to identify, harvest, and safely prepare 20+ wild edible plants and wild mushrooms commonly found in Virginia. Hands-on foraging walk covering local plants, ethical harvesting practices, and sustainable wildcrafting. Discover abundance hidden in plain sight!
Backpacking Trip
Two-day wilderness immersion summiting Dragons Tooth, McAfee Knob, and Tinker Cliffs. Extended time on the trail and around campfires allows space for deeper conversation and reflection. Shared miles, shared meals, shared challenge. The weekend balances physical adventure with intentional session to explore themes of authentic self-knowledge, relationship-building, and what emerges when pretense strips away in wild places.
Intermediate Rock-Climbing Course
Advanced skills for outdoor climbing: anchor building, rappelling, outdoor belay transitions, route finding, crag etiquette, and natural protection basics. Prerequisite: Introduction to Rock Climbing or equivalent experience.
*2-day (evening) course on Tues. 3/24 and Thurs. 3/26
Rock Climbing Trip
Weekend climbing trip to iconic rock formations. Multi-pitch traditional and sport routes for experienced climbers; single-pitch beginner terrain available. Extended time on rock and in community creates space for both skill development and relational depth. Climbing together. Cooking together. Growing together.
Fly Fishing 101
Beginner fly fishing class covering equipment basics, casting fundamentals, knot tying, fly selection, reading water, and catch-and-release ethics. Professional instruction. Indoor/outdoor casting practice.
Fly Fishing 201
Intermediate fly fishing skills: advanced casting techniques, mending line, nymphing vs. dry fly fishing, entomology basics, and presentation strategies. Prerequisite: Fly Fishing 101 or equivalent experience.
Fly Fishing Trip
Weekend fly fishing immersion on stocked trout streams. Extended time on the water — learning patience, reading subtle signs, and practicing presence. Catch-and-cook dinner Saturday evening. Cabin lodging provides an ideal setting for meaningful discussions, shared meals, and cultivating community. The rhythm of casting, waiting, and trying again creates natural space for reflection and conversation.
Whitewater Weekend
Weekend immersion in Class II-III whitewater, including elements of river hydrology and swiftwater rescue. Professional instruction in river navigation, scouting, rescue techniques, and team coordination on moving water. The river's power demands trust, communication, and mutual dependence.
